Aotea was founded in 2017. Inspired by mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), this knowledge manifests itself in Aotea's range of therapeutic skincare. Aotea is the Māori name for Great Barrier Island,  where Aotea grows all the native flora used in their range, they extract the active compounds and use these healing extracts for the key tenants in their products.
